SAM LUXEMBURG
BA (Psych), Grad Dip Couns Psych, MAPS, Prof Member of CAPAV

Sam Luxemburg is the Director of The Lux College which he founded in 2000 after realizing that many people graduate from counselling or psychological qualifications without the necessary skills to effectively counsel and ultimately help clients. He is dedicated to teaching his students the skills of person centred counselling (these skills are empathy, unconditional positive regard and congruence), which enables them to truly hear and understand others. The Lux College trains first class counselors and is an organization dedicated to increasing self awareness and improving relationships through real communication.

Sam regularly appears on radio and his ideas are sought after at conferences and workshops. He is a highly respected psychologist, trainer and counsellor. He coaches for The Mt Eliza Business School; teaches for the Southern School of Natural Therapies; is regularly called upon to provide counselling for disasters that occur within Australia. Sam has worked in a variety of roles as a psychologist, counsellor and teacher for the past 26 years. He previously worked in the IT industry for 20 years.

Sam has a BA in psychology from Swinburne University and a graduate diploma in counselling from Monash University, plus three years’ training with the Gestalt Institute of Melbourne.

He believes his most rigorous training has been self-development through encounter groups, various workshops and large doses of life experience.

Sam’s approach to training counsellors centres on individuals developing their own style of counselling through personality, spirituality, life experiences and intuition.

As a counsellor he sees individuals, couples and groups - in Collingwood and Woodend.

He lives with wife Joan on a beautiful seven-acre property near Woodend, and has two adult daughters.

Testimonials

Sam Luxemburg, the Principal of the College creates a warm and intimate learning environment where there is equality of spirit, and where the foundation principles of empathy, congruence and unconditional positive regard are practised.

Sam has an amazing capacity for genuine love and compassion for everyone. His holistic approach is to use the students’ issues and experiences as grist for the teaching mill, where theory becomes secondary to one’s personal understanding of oneself.

The skills learned in Sam’s course will not only lead you to becoming a certified counsellor, I feel positive that they will also become your life skills.

- SHEENA WATERHOUSE, current student

I found the Basic Skills in Counselling course an exciting and challenging introduction to the Certificate in Personal Counselling. Counselling is a field that I have long been interested in but, until now, unsure how to pursue.

Sam Luxemburg presents the Basic Counselling Skills course in a relaxed and stimulating environment, with personal experiences and development the keys to success over dry theories. I felt I was involved with real people experiencing real life issues.

I would highly recommend the course for those who are ready to explore where they are at and where they are heading, those ready to explore and change the dynamics of their family, work and social situations, or those who - like me - are wishing to use the specific approach and skills as a career path.

- ROBYN JORDAN, graduate

If I have never told you this I thank you and always appreciate the support, encouragement and opportunities you provide.

You are without doubt one of the most wonderful, special and important influences in my life. You really do make a difference in the world.

- KATHRYN EGGINGTON, graduate

The tears, the laughter, the anger, the rawness and intensity of this powerful course has helped me to know that it's ok to be me, even if that means I'm scared, or observing and checking what's coming out of my mouth. I have choice and my choice is good for me in that moment.

I have much more awareness. I'm constantly checking inside myself to see how I feel, asking myself what am I feeling, saying, doing as I'm speaking to people, particularly if I'm feeling nervous or fearful.

I feel much more peaceful about myself; my self-acceptance is greater now than it has ever been. I'm beginning to love myself, even if in my eyes I've stuffed up. I'm stronger in my resolve to be there for myself, to trust my own intuition and guidance.

I feel like I've come home, that I've finally found a place where I can practise what I feel – TO LIVE EACH MOMENT AS MY TRUE SELF - and it's a very, very good place to be!

- SYLVIA FORTNAM, graduate
